I have watched many boys being circumcised at a Jewish Bris (circumcision) 8
days after birth. I nursed my son a few hours before and tried to nurse right
after the Mohel was done. The baby was fast asleep. A grandparent or another
special adult dips gauze into wine and the baby sucks this. I have only seen
a baby cry 1X . The person was not letting the baby suck his finger with the
wine enough. The Mohel is extremely is FAST.

I think that the hospital procedure is done so quickly after birth that it
puts even more stress on the baby. The baby seems more sleepy and not willing
to nurse well. Most parents inform me that this is the only way they can get
insurance to cover the expense. I would think that if this could be done at
7-8 days it would help promote a better breastfeeding start. Our Mohel has
also stated that the blood clots better.

My 2nd son could not have a full circumcision because his penis was held down
with extra skin. We did a fake Bris. The Mohel just poked him once with a
needle. We had surgery at 10 months old. The nurse was quite surprised when I
started nursing my baby minutes after the surgery. She said that she was not
ready for me to nurse him yet. He was still hooked up to an IV and monitors.
While I was nursing him they unhooked the IV and his levels stabilized.
Everyone was happy.
