Sue: I have no information nor any experience with trileptal. However, in
all such situations I like to point out that there are usually alternate
medications which are just as effective for any given condition as the one
being used. Unless this mother has been tried unsuccessfully on a bunch of
other anticonvulsants, it may be preferable to switch to one with a better
track record for breastfeeding such as Depakote (valproic acid) or Tegretol
(carbamezepine), both of which are considered compatible with breastfeeding
by the AAP (there are others as well). Unless these medications are
inappropriate for her type of seizures or don't work for her, they would be
better to use. If the doctor insists without any good reason that it must be
trileptal, the mother can ask what he/she would prescribe for her if she were
allergic to or had severe side effects from the trileptal. Bottom line:
there's almost always a safer alternative medication. Hope this helps.
Regards, Alicia Dermer, MD, IBCLC
