Avelox (moxifloxacin) is a new fluoroquinolone antibiotic (of the class of
antibiotics such as Cipro).
Most drugs searches list fluoroquinolones as unsafe for breastfeeding
because of cartilage erosion shown in animals.
This has never been shown in humans or in children breastfeeding when
mothers have taken fluoroquinolones.
Mothers have and continue to breastfeed while taking fluoroquinolones.
Tom Hale suggests the fluoroquinolones of choice for breastfeeding mothers
to be:
Levofloxacin
Norfloxacin
Ofloxacin
So, if the physician is still concerned about the use of Avelox, then choose
one of the above alternatives and let the mother breastfeed.
