Last year I heard Peter Flemming from Bristol talk about this issue. He has
been researching SIDS for at least 20years I think. He said that most of the
babies who were reported to have died while bedsharing were infact alone in
the bed at the time. The problems occur when mother leaves the bed, but this
is not what is reported. It is inappropriate to leave a baby in an adult bed
unsupervised. He also told us how there is nothing apart from bedsharing
that can change the adult sleep cycle from 90 minutes except sleeping with a
baby, which has a sleep cycle of 60 minutes, so the mother's physiology
actually changes to fit in with her baby. This has a protective effect that
is absent when the mother is absent. I dont think this is going off subject
as bedsharing is an integral part of successful breastfeeding and clear
guidelines without the sensational reporting can only benefit.
