Thanks Dawn and everyone. I spoke at length to the mom yesterday, the
day she was released from the hospital. Both babies are still in the
special care unit, but they are doing much better. The "problem" now is
that they are jaundiced and they will not release, even with home
lights, until the babies are under 10. The mom and I talked about how
the hospital and nurses, etc. are doing a very poor job of supporting
breastfeeding but at this point the mom just wants to go home and get
the babies home and not fight them. I respect and understand her
choice. I evaluated the one baby and he has a good suck, good latch,
etc. but is sleepy and not wanting to nurse often, what with an iv,
pacifier etc. Mom's milk has come in and she is starting to pump and is
also nursing the babies every 3 hours. She is willing to just deal with
breastfeeding problems when she gets home. The other baby, according to
mom, is sucking fine as well.
