Ellen,
I live just north of San Francisco and have found that for the most part
bfing in public is accepted. I have gotten looks from people, but in 5 1/2
years of nursing children I haven't ever been asked to leave an area or even
approached about nursing. In some places there are baby rooms (with a
picture of a bottle) that are comfortable enough to nurse in. There doesn't
seem to be any particular facilities for nursing moms. I find that the
culture in San Francisco, is accepting but not necessarily encouraging of
breastfeeding mothers. There are several LLL groups in SF. I wouldn't be
particularly worried about nursing in public in SF. One good thing about
California is that every nursing mother has a legally protected right to
breastfeed in public. Anywhere that the mother has permission to be, then
she also is protected for breastfeeding in public. Here's hoping she has a
wonderfully, uneventful trip. Please feel free to email me privately if you
have more specific questions.

<Can you, in Seattle, L.A., San Francisco, and New york City shed some light
on the breastfeeding habits of Moms who hang out in these cities.>
