Thank you for all your input about the mom with nipple thrush, and if it
could be passed on through her milk to her 2 lb baby. The majority of
people said the benefits far outweighed the risk. I just wanted to update
you all on the mom and how it was going. She gave me permission to post
this.
Today her son was put back on gavage feedings...he had been NPO due to some
blood in his stools. The doctor called the mom to tell her the good news,
but she also informed her that since she saw somewhere in the babies chart
that the mom had an infection, she told the mom to dump all the milk she
had frozen, as well as to dump all the milk she was currently pumping, and
they would dump all they had in a stash in the hospital. So this poor
woman went home and dumped over 150 ounces down the sink, crying the whole
time. The doctor had told her that she could continue pumping, and until
the infection was over, she should pump and dump. She also told her that
the preemie formula was as good as breastmilk anyway. (GRRRRR)
So when the mom and dad finally got to the hospital, they spoke to the LC,
who had a fit that someone told her to dump the milk. They had cultured
the milk and it had come back negative. They are now investigating the
whole thing, because when they went back to the original doctor who had
said to dump the milk, she denied it.
Luckily, the mom is comitted to pumping and she is going to keep doing
so. But I guess I just wanted to thank all you LCs for being advocates for
these moms who have so little say and are so vulernable. I didn't realize
until I heard this, how frustrating and exhausting this work must be for
some of you. I get a taste of it in the league work I do, but I think you
really deal with much more of the day to day misinformation that is out
there. What can I say, except that the world needs you...
Trish
