Hi Sara
I have the following in some notes I did for a presentation some time ago.
Unfortunately, I don't have references.
Amylase activity in the duodenum of the newborn is only 0.2% to 0.5% of the
adult level. At about 6 months the baby is still deficient. Amylase,
secreted from the salivary glands and pancreas does not reach adequate
levels until 2 years after birth. Somewhere else I have written that
amylase is not secreted at all in the first 3 months. I am hoping someone
can throw some more light on this.
