i was at a conference last year and attended a fascinating session by kay
hoover. one thing she mentioned as a possible cause of *no* milk (as
opposed to low milk supply), based on 2 cases she saw, is theca-lutien
ovarian cysts (sp?). apparently this is a pregnancy related occurence, and
the cysts fade post-partum, over the course of weeks. these two moms had
no milk at all, and then as the cysts shrank, their testosterone levels
dropped toward normal, and both moms developed a full milk supply, with
milk coming in just as if the baby had just been born! i believe this was
at 40 days post-partum, or so. i believe the moms were pumping the whole
time, but not sure how regularly or frequently. the high testosterone level
was the indicator of this problem, i believe - i can't remember whether
there is a specific test for theca-lutien cysts - anyone know? although
this is probably a fairly rare occurence, if one LC saw wo cases within a
year or so, i would imagine it might be worth looking at when presented
with a mom who has no milk at all. anyone else ever encounter this
issue? My apologies to kay hoover if i have presented any of these details
erroneously.
