Hello Lactnetters,
Had an interesting outpt. case yesterday. 5 day old term infant who was 'feeding all the time' and a little low on wet and stool diapers according to first week log. Bubble palate otherwise normal oral exam. We tried getting an optimal asymmetric latch many times but baby had lots of dimpling despite improved latch. Swallowing was difficult to detect, was he just a polite eater? After 30 min. on 1 side baby got 12 cc, after 10 min on the other side he got 4 cc. I told mom that some premature babies get more milk with a nipple shield, she said she'd try it. He got 42 cc in 4 (four) minutes! His cheeks were dimpling slightly. He came off with surprised, widely open eyes as if to say, 'Who turned on the faucet?'. He then fell asleep. Parents said he was the most content since they had brought him home. Mom has lots of milk and was using disposable diapers as breast pads.
Just wanted to share this fun story.
