Cheryl speaks of a baby that seems to have a poor latch but is gaining
well.
I have seen these too as well as latches I was certain whould be giving
mom lots of pain, but baby gains well and mom says there is no
soreness! I have concluded that for each mom/baby pair there is a
different "window of effectiveness". Some get attached in the strangest
ways and do fine while for others, a "silly millimeter" change can make
a world of difference. One factor is probably that some moms have such
a strong MER, especially at first) that it overcomes what for others
would be a very ineffective latch. With these, there is a potential for
the supply dipping later when the ongoing stimulation is so critical to
maintainance of production.
It just goes to show that no one factor is the "be all and end all" in
assessing how well (effectively) a baby is nursing.
