Nursing a baby during a circumcision would not be feasible. I can think of
no way to get a mother close enough to the baby to nurse, without
interfering with the procedure. Also, it is a fairly brutal procedure to
observe and the parents I have worked with that have been present to
comfort the baby did not do well.

I also agree with another poster that doing painful procedures while
nursing would have the potential to lead to a bad association ie,
breastfeeding=pain.

We do not use the sucrose pacifiers, but did look at them. They are very
pricey. We decided to stick with a plain pacifier for now.

We had this discussion at work just the other day. It is good to focus on
pain and ways to reduce it...but certain painful procedures will need to be
done (or in the case of circumcision, parents will choose to have it
done). Sometimes the pain can be reduced with reasonable
measures...sometimes not. Some doctors will give a local, some not.

Whatever happens, just get the mom and baby together after.
