Whenever I bring this up with hosp staff, the most common response is that
the mothers don't want to hold their babies skin to skin with all that
"yuck" all over baby.
We still warn against water bathing the baby before the umbilicus has
fallen off to prevent infection. Until that time, Moms are told that baby
only needs cleaning occasionally with a soft wet cloth and no soap & no
lotions because baby doesn't need them.
We also have long hours for visitation, 11am - 8pm because the mothers want
it and we have to stay competitive with other hospitals. But by our state's
law, no children under 12 years are allowed on patient floors during RSV
season. Sure makes it difficult to help nursing moms on the Med-Surg floors.
We have to give out gift bags because the mothers expect them and we have
to stay competitive with other hospitals.
