I think the real question is not, is there candida in the milk, but is --
does the candida in the milk cause a problem (thrush) in the baby, ergo --
yeast on the nipples for the mother. So -- a question to you all. How many
of you have mothers who have fed their infants pumped milk that was collected
when there was a yeast infection of one or the other (mom or baby), and the
baby -- and subsequently the mom -- ended up with a yeast infection?
I'm reminded of a study that was done many years ago in which mothers of
preterm infants were instructed to wash their nipples with phisoderm prior to
each feed/pumping. The outcome of the study was that these mothers had less
bacteria on their nipples than mothers that didn't wash their nipples. But
that was the wrong outcome -- the true outcome is: does washing the nipples
prior to feeding or pumping make a difference in the morbidity or mortality
of the infant? What is the bottom line?
So the question isn't whether or not yeast is present in the milk, but does
that yeast cause a problem?
Just because someone drinks a beer or eats a yeast roll doesn't mean they
suddenly have an overgrowth of yeast.....
