Jo-Anne asked about communication abilities in other animals. Anyone
interested in this topic would enjoy "The Language Instinct" by linguist
and neuroscientist Stephen Pinker -- a fascinating, witty book on many
different aspects of language, and how the mind works. Its main idea is
that, while other animals can communicate some basic information, true
creative language is a uniquely human trait, like web-spinning in
spiders. One chapter examines the experiments with chimps and gorillas
"talking" with sign language. Anyone who's watched it happen would also
enjoy the chapter on how children acquire language.
