In my study of one (me), I was amennorheic for 6
months to the day after giving birth to my eldest.
She had had 2 nursing strikes during the weeks before,
lasting 2-3 days each, both related to erupting teeth.
I pumped like crazy through both strikes, but I think
the different stimulation (and the stress) was enough
to initiate hormonal changes.
Once the teeth were in, Emma went back to nursing as
usual. Had 2 more months of amennorhea, then had
menses in April and May. The one due for June never
arrived...due to a surprise pregnancy, the lovely
result of which is now wiggling in my lap (and still
nursing a week shy of her 3rd birthday). Periods
began again and were surprisingly regular when my
second was 7-8 months old; Claire never went through a
nursing strike.
A good friend who nursed all 4 of her kids never had
any periods for a good 12 to 18 months postpartum.
Different women, different hormone levels?? Could be
an interesting endocrinology study topic...
