Trileptal is a different form of carbamazepine (tegretol), It is
actually oxcarbazepine. The little extra group on it causes it to be
metabolized totally differently, avoiding the epoxide metabolite that
causes most of tegretol's side effects. The epoxide metabolite can
sometimes accumulate in children, yet tegretol is approved for use in
breastfeeding mothers by the AAP. Trileptal, which totally avoids the
epoxide metabolite, should be safer yet.
