>The sad story of babies not being permitted to breastfeed in a hospital
>(!!!) reminds me of a cartoon I saw. A sign at the entrance to the
>maternity dept read: "MATERNITY. NO CHILDREN ALLOWED." I wonder if
>the staff would have objected if the mother would have bottle fed.
In my young and innocent days, my father had an endarterectomy when my
second child was 6 weeks old. I wanted to visit my father at the hospital,
2 1/2 hours away, but wasn't about to leave my son. And after all,
neurology isn't exactly the most infectious unit.
As I waltzed into the hospital, babe in arms, I honestly *assumed* that
their concern was for my baby's welfare. As nurses and staff confronted me
with "you can't bring a baby in here," I responded breezily with, "Oh, it's
okay. He'll be fine. He's breastfed and he'll be with me. He's not going
to catch anything," and kept on walking. No one had a quick enough answer
to this, so I had a nice visit with my dad. It was only years later that I
realized how far my innocence had carried me.
