I have batted this idea around with a few of you off the list, using
illustrative photos I have taken myself, of the C-hold and the 'post partum
pinch' referred to in my earlier post, when I expressed my concern about
misunderstanding and misuse of the teacup hold. The 'pinch' is what may
result in Barbara Wilson-Clay's pillowcase with no pillow in it.

I have not seen any illustration of the teacup hold myself but as I
understand it, it would be something I could imagine using in some selected
situations. From my illustration you may be able to see why I am worried
that less skilled helpers might mistake the 'pinch' for the teacup hold,
despite Pamela's very clear explanation of how it differs. I repeat
Gonneke's plea that we do what we can to ensure that those who may use it,
actually have the skill and knowledge to use it right.

The illustrations I have were made for the express purpose of showing
mothers the difference between a good way to present the breast in the very
early days, as described by Renfrew and Fisher in Bestfeeding, and the way
that is all too often used/shown/taught on maternity wards, which results in
a superficial latch and much pain and soreness, all of it IMO completely
unnecessary. They are in a book given to all new mothers here, in a chapter
on establishing BF which I wrote, drawing heavily on Jack Newman's and
Renfrew and Fisher's work.

My obliging friend who willingly posed for the pictures is not identifiable
except to those who already know what her breasts look like, and she is not
identified when I show them either.

I can send these illustrations to Lactnetters off the list. They are in
.jpg format. If you wanted to print them out or show them on your own PC to
others at your workplace or with clients, that would be fine, as long as you
included my name as the photographer and source. It would *not* be fine for
you to include them in a publication, whether for sale or for free
distribution, because that is not the kind of agreement I have with my
friend. She is, of course, also dedicated to eradicating needless pain with
BF!
If you want to do your own slides you can of course do what I did and get a
friend to pose for you. I didn't invent either one of these grasps.

If you would like copies, send me an e-mail with the following text,
followed by your full name and where in the world you live.

I would like copies of your .jpg files 'C-hold' and 'post-partum pinch' to
use as slides or printed out, with individual clients or among my own
colleagues at my workplace. I understand that I am not to distribute them
to others nor to use them in public presentations or printed matter for
distribution to mothers or anyone else.
