My son's nursing well into the verbal age has proven both a blessing and
interesting in many ways.  He just turned three and went for his annual
check up at the pediatrician's.  We hadn't seen the pediatrician in an
entire year and he has only missed one day of preschool this year.  I was
impressed when my son sat on his own chair for the hemoglobin and lead test
and didn't cry even though he said it hurt.  He started to get worried
about the amount of blood that they squeezed into the tube.  In a rare
moment I actually came up with an analogy that seemed to satisfy him.  I
explained that his body would make more blood, just like mommy's breast
makes more milk after he empties it.  He's now into a lot of pretend play.
So after being reassured about the blood loss, he went on to describe how
his breast fills up and empties for his doll "Gopher" (who used to be a
boy, but is now a girl that he gave birth to and is also his sister).  A
while ago everyone was posting about the code names their children used. He
has never used code names, but fortunately we live in Manhattan where no
one has ever given me a hard time about nursing my very verbal son in
public.

Enjoying the many more serious and interesting messages (than this bit of
fluff), but too tired and brain dead from doing our own taxes to spend as
much time as I'd like on Lactnet.
