The few moms with pierced nipples I have worked with have also had milk
flowing out of the pierced hole. Usually that's when I have noticed the
nipple has been pierced (Have only had one who was wearing jewelry at
the time I saw her). I would imagine this would get better over time
with more regular letdowns.
On a related note, has anyone read the article in Plastic &
Reconstructive Surgery (Feb 2001) by Erik Scholten? He describes using
nipple piercing and placing a small barbell in the nipple as a treatment
for inverted nipples. The pictures in the article were quite
convincing. He states it is not known if it is permanent but the
nipples remained everted for the year after the piercing. It's
intriguing after reading the numerous articles by plastic surgeons and
their surgical treatments for inverted nipples. Got a few raised
eyebrows from the OB's when I mentioned this article last month - but if
it works?? It might even sound like a good idea with some of our mothers.
