The listmothers have received comments about what the writers perceive as
different treatment of subscribers, in the application of review
status. Subscribers on review status are not able to post directly to the
list, rather, their posts are intercepted and approved, or not, by the
listmothers for posting, according to the Lactnet guidelines. Review
status lasts for a finite period of time, and if after that time it is
deemed unnecessary to continue, the subscriber goes back to regular
subscriber status.

The review process can be used to protect Lactnet from liability to legal
action resulting from posts which could be construed as libelous or
defamatory. It could also be used to protect Lactnet from unacceptable
levels of off-topic posts, or abusive or inappropriate posts from specific
subscribers. Any of these reasons warrants the use of the review tool.

There is also a way to exclude subscribers from the list and this has been
used in the past after much pondering and discussion among listmothers,
quite possibly more pondering and agonizing than the subscribers who
elicited it, deserved.

It is the prerogative of the listmothers to determine where the line
between acceptable and unacceptable goes. The review process is
time-consuming for us, and we do this work for free, in our unpaid
time. We have every reason to want to avoid using it except when
absolutely necessary, after other efforts to gain the cooperation and
understanding of the subscriber in question have failed.

We are interested in hearing your views, but PLEASE not on Lactnet. We
very much appreciate it when you communicate directly to us, off the list,
at the address [log in to unmask]

We continue to be very, very grateful to all of you who have complied with
our many requests to leave off-topic posts, off Lactnet. Most recently,
this means the Immunization topic. We hope you understand our desire to
have as low a threshhold and as wide a doorway, as possible for those who
are concerned with the topic of Lactnet, namely, helping breastfeeding
mothers and their babies. For this to succeed, the long and complicated
guidelines for Lactnet were devised, and they seem to be working pretty
well. Few e-lists enjoy the focus and politeness we do, and we hope to
continue sharing that with all of you in the times ahead.
sincerely,
your listmothers
