Hello,
I have a mother/baby pair with an unusual situation that I'm hoping that
someone here may have experience with or could point me in the right
direction for more information. The baby was born at 36wks gestation, spent
one week in NICU, has been home since, breastfeeding going very well, last
weight check baby had gained 13 oz in 14 wks. Normal BM's etc. Baby has
severe colicky symptoms - was spending on average at least 7 hours a day
screaming, and body was very rigid... Mom has tried most all usually
recommended colic treatments, even went off all dairy for 2 weeks and saw no
changes. Her son who is 27 mo. had problems breastfeeding (latch, sore
nipples, etc) and she quickly started formula... he had same symptoms
(screaming, rigidity), kept switching formulas, saw pediatric
gastroenterologists, had some blood in stool, was found to not be able to
break down proteins well and was put on Neocate at 6 months (colic ended
immediately). He is still on a form of it now and will most likely be until
~10yr of age (this is what the mother has been told). Her son also has to
avoid all dairy. Given that her son has this problem, her pediatrician
wanted to send her in to hospital to have lower GI done on baby, mom asked
what they would do if lower GI showed inflammation, he told her they would
try Neocate, so they decided to try Neocate for three days to see if it
helped... she didn't want to interrupt breastfeeding since it was going
well (except for the severe crying) but was desperate after two days of
non-stop crying except for 30 min breaks when the baby would tire herself
out... so she tried Neocate, baby was mildly fussy for next 6 hrs but not
rigid, has been comfortable and symptom-free since... mom is using breast
pump to keep milk supply and hoping for some guidance or information that
will give her hope that the baby can return to nursing. Anyone with any
knowledge of protein intolerance and possibility of maintaining
breastfeeding relationship?
Thank you,
Donya Platt
