>FORMULA DOWN:
Rambam Hospital in Haifa has managed during the past two years to cut its
expenses on baby formula for newborns by 45% by encouraging new
mothers to breastfeed in the hospital. The hospital reported that it has
established a well-appointed "breastfeeding room" with very comfortable
nursing chairs and screens to ensure privacy.
>Dr. Shraga Balzar, head of the neonatal unit, said the educational effort
>has been a "big success" as many more women have asked to breastfeed in the
>hospital and for advice from breastfeeding counselors on nursing their
>babies at home.
>A few weeks ago Rambam also opened a center for breastfeeding counseling
>manned by specially trained nurses. Women from around the country can
>consult them around the clock.
