Kerstin Hedberg Nyquist, PhD, IBCLC, has done landmark work in this area. I
am hoping she will address this thread soon. Her work suggests strongly
that an arbitrary age limit for what we expect of babies at the breast, is
inappropriate.
She has observed them to be much more capable than we have suspected, at
much younger ages and lower weights. I was lucky enough to hear her speak
at a course in Oslo in October 2001, it was inspiring indeed.
Jessica, your post is right on. Paula Meier has shown that babies tolerate
breastfeeding better than drinking from bottles. This seems to hold for
term babies too. From what you posted I don't think you need to be
concerned that you are giving bad info at all.
