Trileptal is oxcarbazepine, another form of carbamazepine, which is
metabolized differently than carbamezepine. Moms on carbamazepine have
breastfed without complications. Trileptal is metabolized to avoid the
epoxide metabolite of carbamezepine, which is cleared more slowly in
children than adults, and is responsible for most of the side effects of
this drug. In other words, trileptal should be even safer than
carbamazepine, which is used frequently in infants, children and
breastfeeding mothers.
