Hi All,

This has not been a stellar week! I just finished reading BabyWise for my
own info to see if it was really that outrageous - it is!. Also this week, I
looked through my yearly QA prior to sending it for analysis and a quick
perusal noted that our duration rate is falling and moms again stating with
increasing frequency that they stopped nursing because they did not have
enough milk. Also I found out that a very good friend of mine is using
BabyWise and would not dream of talking to me about it as she knows my
thoughts on feeding frequency. Her daughter is now a very thin 2 month old,
who nurses just 4 times a day. When I point blank asked her how often she
was nursing at least she told me the truth and I mentioned that most babies
her age would be nursing at least 8 x per day, she never responded. At least
she is starting to supplement a little! She happens to attend the largest
church congregation in our area with over 1500 weekly attendance and a very
large young mother's group who believe this book is awesome. An OB resident
with a 5 week old baby born at 35 weeks with birth asphyxia wonders why her
baby won't do what the book says and...............a respected local
program that offers developmental intervention and counseling recommends
this book for their parenting classes.

Like I said BAD WEEK. My question is this. Have any of you worked
collectively to discourage the use of this book in your respective
communitues? Do you folks know that it appears on the AAP webiste as
recommmended reading! So, a letter written from our Lactation Center, might
not be taken to seriously by many. We do not have a local task force, but
perhaps this issue might drive me to spearhead one. We really need to
collectively come together and make a statement if we can.

I have never read a more biased book that has NO references to speak of and
bashes other methods of parenting so openly. Unfortunately, it makes good
sense to those who don't know any better!

TIA for you comments and suggestions,
LuAnn Smith RN, IBCLC, and brand new CIMI!
