Hello to all my new colleagues,
I did alot of studying and preparation for the boards this year, ( and was
successful by the way!), and had a hard time finding an exact recommendation
for breast milk storage. I know that through the years you all have
probably discussed this twenty million times, but I am new to all of this.
In Kathleen Auerbach's book Breastfeeding and Human Lactation she recommends
glass or hard plastic containers (polycarbonate or polypropylene) for
storage for ill or preterm infants. It further states that 60% of
antibodies, vitamins, and a considerable amount of fat are lost to the
polyethylene surface in breastmilk storage bags. In other sources, the use
of breastmilk storage bags is acceptable for full term babies. In the
Lactation Management Protocol written by Lactation Education Resources baby
bottle liners (double bagged) for short term use is an acceptable
recommendation. If there is so much lost to polyethylene bags, why are we
recommending them for full term babies?
Also, is polycarbonate or polypropylene plastic better for storage?
Any information you all can offer is greatly appreciated,
Becky Le RN, IBCLC ( The only Lactation Consultant in Bartlesville,
Oklahoma)
