Dawn, you asked about the process of formula recalls in the US. I have kept
the list since 1982 and would be happy to e-mail it to you. NABA also
published the list in its Code monitoring document, Selling Out Mothers and
Babies. There has been a lot of activity at the FDA and with other agencies
concerning the process for recalls. Probably because it took a year to recall
the contaminated Portagen formula that killed a NICU baby. The FDA is
responsible for recalls of formula. However, there are also what are called
Market Withdrawals initiated by the formula company which do not appear as a
formal recall. I have tried to list as many of these as I become aware of.
All problems with formula should be reported to the FDA's MedWatch program.
Food recalls are listed every Wednesday at the FDA's web site. I always check
before I go grocery shopping!
