Sharon asks for suggestions in dealing with an overwhelming MER on one
side.
For every "rule" there seems to be an exception. We usually recommend
using a "C" hold to support the breast during feeding. However, in
cases like this, some moms find it helpful to use the "V", "scissors" or
"cigarette" hold at the start until the flow subsides. The drawback to
this hold is that it might restrict flow from some areas-that's exactly
what you want to do in this case. She needs to be sure she keeps her
fingers far enough back on the breast that she doesn't interfere with
baby getting sufficient breast tissue in its mouth for an effective
latch.
