Fiona,
It is well proven that continuing to breastfeed acellerates healing after
abcess surgery. The milk will exit the breast through the path of least
resistence - if the baby is nursing, that will be through the nipple. If the
mom is forced to wean, the milk will exit through the incision, delaying
healing. This is what is happening with the drain - milk is exiting this way.
Engorgement is much more likely to damage the breast than breastfeeding with
stitches. Also, the breasts are able to function independently. It is not
necessary to wean from both breasts, the unused breast will involute. I have
seen this in several mothers who lactated unilaterally due to previous breast
surgery. Good luck. You win 'ridiculous reasons to wean' contest for this
week!
