One must differentiate between the breasts making the milk and the baby
actually getting it. I'm seeing a stream of babies who are unable to strip
the milk sinuses. Lack of milk removal means reduced/low supply. I'm
absolutely convinced that far too many babies have crummy sucks, at least at
first - maybe that's why supply is really high in the beginning and is
modified downward. You can't say anything sensible about supply if you aren't
100% positive the baby is doing his/her part in milk transfer! And letting a
baby get hungrier won't work - the tongue is a muscle needing glycogen to
contract strongly and sequentially. Suck gets worse if calories are limited,
just like contraction patterns in any other muscle group. My #1 rule is FEED
THE BABY, no matter what else is happening.
