One of the interesting statements I read from the Canadian Paediatric
Society's statement on "Nutrient needs and feeding of premature infants," was
that "For term infants, mother's milk is the "gold standard" for nutrient
requirements.  However, it is not the reference standard for nutrients for
premature infants...."

Previous to this statement we are told that there is no data on nutrient
requirements because it simply does not exist.  I understand.  Since we have
no data, we will believe that mother's milk cannot be the gold standard for
premature infants.  Yes, I finally get it.  Does it make sense? Not to
me...We could just as easily say since we have no data that we could use
preterm human milk as the gold standard. I think it depends on your
perspective.......
