I don't know why this mom who has a stuffy nose would wean. If her doctor
tells her that Afrin is not ok ( and I can't find it either)...but ....she
could ask for medication that is compatible with breastfeeding, or she
could use saline nose drops, ...and if this doesn't work, and her doctor
refuses to listen to her, I would suggest that she research her area
resources for a new physician.

There is a book Clinical Therapy for Breastfeeding Mothers by Hale, which
outlines treatment plans (with regard to pharmaceuticals) for lactating
women. It is not here next to me, but I do recommend buying one of these as
they are so very valuable. I also recommend that mothers use common sense,
and when a piece of advice seems like a clunker ( like this one...wean the
baby so that you can use nasal spray for a few days for a cold), look to
the source of the CLUNK and wonder what's up with the CLUNKing advice.? : )

I would also refer the mother to Jack Newman MD's pages at
www.breastfeedingonline.com, the pages about How to Tell if Your Health
Care Professional is Supportive of Breastfeeding.

Mothers must take some responsibility in this, and not make decisions based
on a piece of advice that seems out of bounds.
