Susan,
I know full well what you're talking about.  We can't please all of the
people all of the time. I  have run into situations where it seems any
response except the one the other party wanted is taken the wrong way or
received in anger.  You are fortunate in having a supportive
supervisor.  While it's certainly true that we can learn from the
responses of others, sometimes, no matter what we do or say, short of
totally compromising our standards, will be taken negatively.
It sounds like the couple you spoke of had some strong feelings that
they wanted to be sure to turn back on others so they wouldn't feel them
toward themselves!
Don't let this experience discourage you.  It sounds like you take a
very supportive approach to the moms you talk with.
