We are rewriting our patient education booklet on breastfeeding and trying to
update it to match the evidence based guidelines. We had a great little chart
from Texas WIC that haad the number of poopy and wet diapers to expect if
breatfeeding is going well on day 1, 2 ,3 etc. Another guideline we saw said
1 of each on day 1, 2 of each on day 2, and more then 3 from day 3 on. One
of the other LC's said that was incorrect information, that a baby should
have 3 poops on day 1.Evidence Guidelines booklet says breastfeeding is not
going well if less then 3 poops by day 3. We have not found much consistent
information on these guidelines. What do you have in your patient education
pieces? I hate these guidelines anyway-I think it is so much better to watch
the baby but with the babies today being so drugged with childbirth meds, we
don't really ever see "normal" breatfeeding babies anymore. The other day,
while I had another LC who is doing orientation with me along for the day, we
did not ever see a baby nursing. We taught moms to finger feeds all day long
because all the babies were too out of it to nurse. The babies just would lay
there with the mom's nipple in their mouth, not even attempting to suck. Two
of the babies wouldn't even respond to the finger in their mouth. ( OK-there
is one of my frustrations out today!!).
