RE: AAAABRE
Probably because my main words were "la boca GRANDE" (big mouth) while I
demonstrated with MY big mouth!
I really laughed when I read this, because despite the fact that I am
totally bilingual, one of my most effective teaching tools is my own facial
expressions...
When I visit a mom - English or Spanish speaking - I spend time looking at
the baby, waiting for the quiet alert time when the baby is looking at me
or at mom, then I teach the mom to open wide and say AAABRE - with my
tongue far out. This way, the moms learn to teach their babies to open
wide (the word OPEN is useless, as the mouth is not open wide - so all
mom/baby pairs learn this much Spanish).
I suggest to them that they say the word Abre whenever they are trying to
latch the baby on, so they remember to wait until the baby's mouth is open
wide - and the baby learns the "cue" of hearing the word means open your
mouth wide so you can get some food!
