Sounds like excessive compression of the nipple, possibly leading to
vasospasm. Ask mom if her nipple turns white and stings or burns a few
minutes after the baby lets go of the breast.
Try helping mom to obtain a deeper, asymetrical latch, and see if that
helps.
I've never seen thrush be only unilateral, but there's always a first
time for everything!
