<< The mother takes baby to daycare, and they can only get the baby to take
2
ounces of breastmilk by bottle in the morning, and 2 ounces at night. Stools
are runnier than what you would expect in an 8-month old, but the feedings
are mostly breastmilk feedings.

Baby is also developmentally ok - sitting w/o suppport and mentally
responsive. This baby is alert, happy, and always smiling. The parents are
very attentive to the baby.
The ped is now sending mom to a specialist to look at the possibility of
metabolic disorders. Mother told me today that baby's dad has a father who
has had Crohn's disease. >>

Brenda,
Crohn's Disease has food allergy and intolerances associated with it. They
are also implicated in slow weight gain for some babies. I am a bit confused
by the 2oz in morning and at night. How long is the baby in daycare? You
say
feedings are mostly breastmilk--is the baby also getting AIM or do you mean
as compared with the amount of solids? This baby may be refusing allergens,
but not nursing at the breast, which is comforting.
Another thought--I had a client with very large breasts whose sinuses
were pretty far back--she really needed to use excellent positioning and
breast compression to be sure the baby got enough high fat milk. The impact
it had on weight gain was quite impressive.
Zinc deficiency is a factor in FTT or poor weight gain, esp when the
baby
or child seems disinterested in food. It is becoming a more common problem
than I would've suspected. Supplementing is simple as shows quick results.
Has mom tried a feeding method other than a bottle? She could also give
the baby and/or herself EFA supplements, if warranted (actually, they are
almost always warranted in Western diets).
