The thing that's unfortunate about this is that I know it happens every
day but I thought I'd share my sister's experience with you.
My sister had her second child on Thursday morning. She wants to
breastfeed this time, the first time wasn't successful.
Her baby was in the nursery and they brought him back to her. She
figured he had to be hungry because he hadn't eaten in hours so she
tried to nurse and he wasn't having it. She mentioned this to the
nurses and they casually said "Oh we gave him a few cc's of formula!!"
She was like "don't you know I was breastfeeding?" And their comment was
something to the effect of the baby was crying so they just fed him.
UGH!
Now here's a double UGH for you.
The baby spent the day in the NICU to monitor his heart rate. My sister
went down to feed him and again, he wasn't having it. The nurses had
given him a BOTTLE!!!!
What is wrong here? It's sick that the NICU of all places assumed he
was formula fed. What's even worse is that the NICU assumes formula
feeding is the norm so they didn't even check the chart or anything!
And that the nurses in mother/baby think it's o.k. to give just a few
cc's of formula! The NICU acted suprised when as my sister requested,
that they call her when the baby was hungry and she showed right up.
HELLO!?
I was kind of suprised because the hospital she delivered at is now part
of the John's Hopkin's network and I would expect so much more than that
from them.
There are so many "little" things wrong here that it's no wonder that so
many moms don't get it right. The nurses should all be well educated in
breastfeeding and they absolutely are not. You should have heard the
questions the nurses were asking the LC's and the advice they were
giving my sister about her pump.
No wonder only 35 hospitals are certified baby friendly :0(
On a good note, even though the baby wouldn't latch on after the
bottle, he eventually did and then wouldn't let go. I think the kid
knows what he's doing wouldn't you agree!!?
And on an even better note, my sister quit very early on when she nursed
her first. The fact that she went home with a hospital rented pump
shows her determination since she's thinking about the future and sees
herself still nursing.
I for one have tried to butt out of the whole thing; she thinks I'm a
lunatic :0)~~~
Good night ladies,
Karen
