If anyone has any doubts about the effect of marketing on breastfeeding, then
go to the epinions site (www.epinions.com) and read the reviews by mothers of
brands of formulas. I only read those that in some way indicated the mother
had bf, was still bf, or had an opinion about the comparision to human milk.
I wanted to see how much of an effect marketing would have on these mothers,
who clearly began with a positive view of bf'ing. There is quite an education
to be had. Mothers state very clearly that coupons, free formula, ads in
magazines and the propaganda about which is "the next best thing" heavily
influenced their choices, not just of which AIM to buy, but of the safety of
the product at all---the "health" claims about these products are amazing. I
have copied quite a few exerpts (I was up very late last night--it took a
long time to read through them).

C-------n G------rt is a milk-based product made of 100% whey protein which
is the protein found in breastmilk. The company believes that the "Comfort
Proteins" and whey protein mimic breastmilk to the best of their
capabilities. Then, on top of all the other news, I find out that C------n
G------rt is cheaper to boot
N------ C--------n G-----rt publishes the Very Best Magazine. Inside the
magazine, you will find coupons for the formula in addition to some well
written articles. To receive the magazine or more information, you may reach
them by going online to Http://www.verybestbaby.com, or by phone (800)
782-7766.
C--------n G-------rt is the ONLY formula fortified with 100% WHEY PROTEIN.
This protein is found in breast milk and is very important to your baby's
health.
If you look on the label they'll describe to you how the formula is designed
for easy breakdown and digestion. I appreciate how formula companies are ever
improving to be more like breastmilk
C-----n has another really good thing going for them, and that's that they
have two very different formulas; one designed as a starter formula and
another for babies over six months. This is a very impressive development
(and I don't know why the other's haven't joined them in this, because they
started this about 8 years ago). This is patterned from the fact that
breastmilk is ever changing to meet the needs of the developing baby.
Which is why a nursing mother of a colic baby usually has to eliminate dairy
products from her diet for approximately 2 weeks to completely remove the
allergen from her milk and the baby's system. With the culprit removed, the
baby is finally able to see some relief. Now this is where C-------n
G------rt saves the day. They do not have whole milk proteins in their
formula. They use "Whey" which is a similar protein to the whey protein found
in a mother's breast milk, which is much more easily digested by the baby and
much, much friendlier to a baby's immature intestines. This "comfort protein"
is not whole like cow milk protein, but rather it is broken up in smaller
bits. The whey protein in breast milk does the same thing making it easier
for the baby to digest. This is also why the bowel movements of babies on the
C------n G------rt are very similar to the bowel movements of breast fed
babies.
By now I've gotten enough free samples and coupons that my baby boy has tried
all three of the name brands of formula.
I received a couple of coupons for free cans of C-----n G------rt. So a new
parent with a freebie will try the freebie.
After having to give up breastfeeding much earlier than planned, we started
our son on S-----c (powder) for no reason other than we had a sample can
One excellent benefit to using any C-------n formula is their baby club.
Information can be found on their products or at their web site. Most new
moms-to-be find out about it before their pregnancy is through, via those
freebie baby magazines that are in the ob/gyn's office or that start arriving
in the mail.
nothing is as good as breast feeding, but this comes close!
All brands I researched (including C-------n) were iron-fortified, patterned
after breastmilk containing the recommended percentages of fat,
carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.
Although I am breastfeeding my daughter, there are times that I need to give
her a bottle for whatever reason. When I asked her Dr. about supplementing
with formula he suggested G------rt. I have found it to be a wonderful
alternative to breastfeeding. Why??
1. G--------rt is the only formula that begins with 100% whey protein, the
primary type of protein in breastmilk.
2. G-------rt contains what they call "Comfort proteins". This makes the
formula easy to digest.
I love the c-------n formulas because they seem to be easily digested and are
the closest to breastmilk that I have seen.
I was a breastfeeding mom and when my kids began to wean themselves I was
ready to go with S -----c. Feel secure in that formula is getting closer and
closer to a mother’s breast milk though the exact chemical makeup still
remains a mystery and will never match it completely.
S--------- It will make your baby a genius!
Pros: packed full of nutrition, recommended by doctors and hospitals
Well, okay maybe not but it has been proven that Iron is an attributing
factor to brain development and therefore intelligence. That hullaballu
aside...
I picked this formula for several reasons..
* My daughter's pediatrician recommended it.
* Both the hospital and the pediatricion gave me sample cans of it to tempt
me into using it.
* It's a recognizable household name.
* It came with a high recommendation from all the magazines I was pouring
through pre birth.
(From a bf mom)---Our local health department has a program called
WIC.(women, infants and children.) I am not to proud to say that I
participate in this program and receive free food and baby formula. It is run
by nurses, and the state of M-------n. This is their choice of formula for
babies, and my first can of the dry powder was given to me when he was only a
few days old. He seems to do very well with the formula and does not have any
problems drinking it. The can states "Closer than ever to mother's milk" and
I believe that this is true.
next to breast, it's best
I received a convenient starters pack for the new mother from the hospital.
It contained a number of 2 oz bottles ready to use. There was information on
all the S-----c products. There was information on baby's nutritional needs
and a feeding schedule.
I feel that nursing my baby is very healthy for him but S-----c is so close
to breast milk that I don't feel guilty giving it to him as well. It has been
tested that the ingredients and vitamins found in Mothers milk is very close
to the ingredients and vitamins found in S-----c.
As a professional in the medical field for over ten years, I feel I can
honestly review this product for the consumers. The very first place your
newborn resides is the newborn nursery. There a feeding schedule will begin
and choices of products like formula, diapers, and also pacifiers will be
made. All these decisions made in the best interest of your new baby.
Pacifiers are not essential but can play a very important part of the growth
process. In premature infants, the sucking reflex can be weak and sucking can
be strengthened by a properly shaped and sized pacifier.
The F-------P formula is patterned from the fact that breastmilk is ever
changing to meet the needs of the developing baby.
We had signed up at the Hospital for all kinds of freebies and what-nots, and
one of them that we had signed up for was formula samples.... E---- was
breastfeeding for a month and a half, and all of a sudden started resenting
my breast. After a doctor visit, we decided that it was best for E---- to try
formula or she wouldn't get enough to eat period. ...We were given free cans
of the E-----l, which after a week, seemed to upset E----s tummy quite often.
That same day in the mail we received the magazine "The Very Best Baby." I
was about to trash it because I was up to my eyeballs in baby magazines,
until I saw that something was in the middle of the magazine- checks for free
formula! This was a great solution to our problem at the time, so we used the
free formula check, only paying 35 cents in tax was a steal! We also read up
about this product in the magazine and the internet, and had seen several
commercials talking about how C-------n breaks up the protein for easier
digestion for your baby.
The other great thing about this Formula is that you get checks every month
for free formula or $3.00, $1.00, or 50 cents off. The cost per can is around
$7.00, and families on a budget will appreciate that! I look forward to the
magazine every month now and those checks!
