I like that last sentence. Advising mothers of both ways and letting
them
decide from their infant's cues. No hard and fast rules and "You musts"
pontificated by the staff. And good info to feed back to the
grandmothers, aunts, etc. who frequently pontificate this same point to
new mothers.
Maybe this would be good for staff education, so the staff could give
some evidence based guidance instead of blithely telling the mother
"Well
they used to say . . . . . but now they're saying . . . . . . . . so it
doesn't seem to matter much which way you do it, just do what you want
to do."
That's why "finish the first side first" is such a neat way to say it.
Along with that statement, you teach how to know baby is "finished" with
the side and whether he/she would like another course. It isn't "feed
on only one side each time". Sometimes baby wants only tho quench the
thirst or have a small meal, sometimes the baby is looking for a full
10-course dinner!
Incidentally, referring to the shorter feeds as "quenching the thirst"
rather than "snacking" is one way to get the idea past the parents who
are following approaches that frown on baby "snacking" at the breast.
