Having three breastfed children, ages 8, 6 and 4, I do not see pediatricians
very often. The few times I've had to go, maybe once a year since my
youngest was through with the vaccines, I've made it a point to let him/her
know that my four year old is still breastfeeding...and that the
breastfeeding is precisely the reason why they don't see us very often. At
our last visit, one of the doctors in the practice noted that this was most
unusual (he meant our lack of visits)...and true to Diane W., my response
was: Well, this is the way it should be. Kids in affluent societies
(meaning, with plenty of food, access to sanitation and clean water, etc)
are supposed to be healthy....this is the way it would be if breastfeeding
were the norm.

...and I do the same with my gynecologist. At my last revision I mentioned
that was still breastfeeding my son (4). He then asked who had "the
problem" with dependency, me or the child. I put on my best smile and told
him that I thought HE (the MD) had the problem, because we were doing fine.
End of the conversation....on with the revision that resulted in a
"healthy-as- a-horse-breastfeeding-nutcase"

Lavinia Belli....you all know the letters by now!!
(about to fall asleep on the keyboard)
