Scotland has done it!
The Health Education Board for Scotland (which is publicly-funded)
commissioned an ad for breastfeeding, from one of the country's
leading media agencies. The aim was to be as slick, professional and
catchy as anything else you might see on a commercial break. The ads
are currently running (or ran until recently) throughout Scotland.
The ad will be evaluated. I will try to remember to post to Lactnet
when I see the evaulation (I was involved professionally with the ad,
as I wrote some of the education/information material that went with
it).
We have public service announcements, too, in the UK, but they are
usually rather dull, low budget and not terribly alluring. I have
never seen one for breastfeeding. Just this year, the publicly-funded
bf promotion group (in the North-East of England) I am involved in
applied to have one - you apply to your local TV station, and they
help you make your announcement via a small film with a voice-over,
and they give you the air-time free. We were turned down, with no
real reason given : ( We will try again.
