I graduated from nursing school in 1968 & started working in the newborn
nursery. This is exactly what we instructed moms to do. They also had to wash
their nipples with sterile cotton balls & sterile water before each feeding.
We didn't have many breastfeeding moms in those days. Most babies were
formula-fed & were only allowed out with mom for 1 hr, 3 times a day. After
the 6 pm feeding, those babies were kept in the nursery so moms could sleep.
That was a major reason why I chose to breastfeed--I wanted my babies 6 times
a day instead of just 3 times! Moms also stayed in the hospital for 5 days
for an uncomplicated vaginal delivery. Those were the good old days ???!!!!!
I'm glad some things have changed.
