Pamela and Meg, writing about hand expression mentioned,

Having embarassed myself last year by attributing the film to something
Jack Newman was featured in and showed (neither are true) I am happy to
see the reference. This film made a real impression on me. I am now
looking forward to reading references about hand expression vs. pumping.
There are so many arguments in favour of encouraging hand expression (my
principal one is that the hands still belong to the body, and the mother
doesn't get the impression that machines are necessary for birthing or
feeding babies, but being able to teach two things at once -- hand
expression for supplementing and for expression / compression at the
breast -- is a close second) that I really hope someone finds out that
hand expression is effective in situations in which we have been telling
women they need double electric pumping for a certain number of minutes
a day. I know there will still be some situations in which the latter is
necessary, but surely these are the anomalies. So, if there is no
research, I hope someone will do it. (I tried to send a post like this
earlier and it didn't seem to send; apologies for repetition or delay)
