In medieval times it is said that wet nurses used puppies to keep their milk
supplies going in between human customers.  I don't know how many puppies
they needed or how often they suckled them to accomplish this, but I had the
impression they could maintain lactation over weeks or even months if need
be.  Probably was a good way to keep the breasts disinfected as well, dog
spit has loads of lysozymes!
