I would like to reemphasize a point I made about Wolf's characterization of
League; which I read in the post which directly quoted the book. I realize
she qualified her remarks afterwords, and it is not a tirade against League
primarily. But, I have been reading references to League in US publications
for, probably, 20 years. They seem to follow this pattern of totally
gratuitous slamming, with very little evidence. I consider it likely that
her encounters with League were quite "non-judgmental", and brief. When
journalists actually interview us and investigate who we are, the "lactation
fascist" label is soon abandoned. I suspect she "needs" an enemy, and I
think Pat Gima picked up on this too. I have known some Leaders who were
judgmental, and who made women feel bad, but they are totally the exception.
The organization trains you to be a good listener. I suspect she simply
projected her feelings onto this "good listener". And those feelings
reflect poorly on her literary skills, and intellectual points. I reiterate:
League often is perceived as a negative, powerful force, and this is mostly
a projection.
