I have a patient who has given me permission to post her problem:
She is breastfeeding a 6 week old baby, her second, and states that she is
unable to maintain an adequate milk supply on one breast. She can pump 10
ounces from one breast, and barely one ounce from the other. Her breasts
are visibly different in size, but only when she is lactating, not
otherwise. She stated that she weaned her first baby at 12 weeks, because
of this reason (the lopsided appearance of her breasts). She is very upset
about this. Is there any way she can increase the milk production in just
one breast? I know from recent reports that it is not recommended to nurse
on one breast only, and this would only increase the lopsided appearance.
She has not had breast surgery, or implants. She is a working mother, and
did not take any maternity leave to speak of. She brings her baby to work,
and wants to breastfeed for a longer period of time with this baby. She
pumps with a Pump in Style. Any thoughts?
Warmly,
Sharon Gollman, RN, BSN, IBCLC
