If it's not bothering mom, and you think it won't be an issue with the
postpartum nursing staff, I'd say just let it come off slowly and naturally.
The mom I had here with the same condition did use Lansinoh and towel-dry
lightly after showers, but most of it came off with the baby's regular feeds.
I thought it might be an issue with the nursing staff because it really did
look unusual - very thick and caked - and she was going to deliver in a
hospital not exactly known for its support of breastfeeding. One of those
"any reason for a bottle" places. Anyway, it turned out fine. She was back
to smooth, soft nipples about 2 weeks after delivery.
